Restaurant Review: Paradiso Pizza in Xiamen

. . .

You won’t mistake yourself for being in Italy but this tiny stove-fired pizza joint makes an admirable effort in that direction

. . .

If you’re a Westerner and you’ve been living or traveling in China for a long time, you might start to find yourself craving your favorite guilty-pleasures – burgers, fries, milkshakes, pizza.  To get your fix of some of these staples, you could always head to McDonalds or Pizza Hut.  But for something a bit more upscale and trendy consider heading to Paradiso Pizza and Coffee in the hip and happening Shapowei Warehouse/University district of Xiamen.

Here, in an admittedly somewhat cramped if charming setting, you can get reasonably priced red wine, stove fired pizza, tasty salad and fresh juice.  Anna went for the tuna salad.  I ordered the Margherita Pizza and we both opted for banana milkshakes.  They don’t sell soft drinks.  The total for all this was about 130 RMB.

How to get there: The address is 162, #7 Da Xue Lu 大学路 or University Road.  Take the 86 bus to the 中华儿女美术馆 bus station.  Head east on Daxue Road for a few blocks and you’ll see Paradiso on your right.

Prices and Hours: Pizzas are about 70-80 RMB – salads 20-30 RMB and bottles of wine 60-70.  Juices and shakes are 15-20 RMB.  Hours are 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Cool stuff nearby: Curry Laksa
