Restaurant Review: Curry Laksa

. . .

Slurp down some amazing Malaysian style curry soup with noodles in Xiamen’s hip warehouse district

. . .

This tiny establishment which only has two dishes to choose from is legendary in Xiamen for its minimalist, quality over quantity approach.  The middle-aged women behind the counter in the one-room kitchen are friendly and chatty.  The pleasing red and yellow walls are festooned with framed photographs of “old-Xiamen.”  And there are only two items on the menu, something I found oddly reassuring.  No time wasted pondering a dizzying array of dishes.  Just decide if you want chicken or seafood and away you go to scalding, spicy heaven.

Curry Laksa is on Daxue Lu 大学路, a gem of a street near Xiamen University with pleasant cafes, a multitude of offbeat restaurants and more locally oriented shops selling everything from spices to antiques to scrap metal.  The restaurant is conveniently located near the 中华儿女美术馆 bus station.  Just hop on the number 86 bus.  I opted for the chicken curry (wholesome chunks of boneless chicken floating with an egg, veggies and tofu on top of a pile of noodles) while Anna went for the seafood.

How to get there: Take the 86 bus to the 中华儿女美术馆 bus station.  If you have trouble ask around for 咖喱叻沙gālí lè shā.

Prices: Both the chicken and seafood noodle-soups are around 30 RMB, and well worth it.

Hours: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
